JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Guilford Technical Community College invites the community to explore science during an open house at Science Hall 6-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 15 on GTCC’s Jamestown Campus, 601 E. Main St., Jamestown. The event is free and open to the public.

Science faculty and students will present interactive demonstrations in chemistry, physics, geology, biology and engineering. Tours also will be given throughout the evening for students interested in learning more about GTCC’s career pathways in the sciences. In addition, Cline Observatory will be open afterward for viewing (weather permitting).

A list of the featured demonstrations follows.

Physics: Now you see it, now you don’t; now you hear it, now you don’t: An interactive exploration of light and sound as well as static electricity demonstrations.

Biology: Anatomy and physiology activities include electrocardiograms, lung volume determinations and dissections. Molecular biology activities include DNA gel electrophoresis.

Chemistry: Chemistry magic show presentation plus opportunities for hands-on activities.

Geology: Get your hands wet and see how streams shape our landscape.

Engineering: Power of water: GTCC’s engineering students will present recent projects including a hovercraft and CAD drawings of physical models. Students also will be available to discuss engineering career paths and their experience taking engineering courses at GTCC.
