FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 24, 2015
GTCC students Jordan Smith and Candice Lockhart have received the 2014-2015 Developmental Education Scholarship. The recipient is chosen based on academic performance, character and service to the college and the community.
School has not been easy for Smith. From kindergarten through college he’s had to learn to conquer severe Attention Deficit Disorder. After realizing that he wanted to become a diesel technician, Smith had to make life changes that impacted his thinking.
Smith possesses many motives that drive him to do well academically, succeed in lifelong goals and encourage others. He has found three key behaviors to his success: devotion to his chosen career path, to his personal expansion of knowledge and skills, and to his family and creating a future for them.
Lockhart enrolled in GTCC’s Fire Protection Program in fall 2013 and worked full time while also attending classes full time. She strives to do her best, maintaining A’s in the Fire Protection Technology courses. She is an instructor’s dream of a student, completing all of her assignments ahead of time, asking great questions in class, and leading her class in discussions. Lockhart plans to continue her studies at Western Carolina University in Emergency and Disaster Management. She has set a goal of becoming a firefighter in Guilford County.
