GTCC FLIGHT TEAM CLAIMS FIRST PLACE AWARDS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NOVEMBER 17, 2016
JAMESTOWN, N.C. — The G-Tech Flyers, Guilford Technical Community College’s Flight Team, recently took home several awards from Region X SAFECON.
GTCC received first place in two categories. GTCC students Zachary Brendle placed first in Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Recognition, and Logan Wicks placed first in Preflight Inspection and was also named Region X Top Pilot.
In addition, Audrey Floyd, department chair of GTCC’s Aviation Management and Career Pilot program and faculty advisor for the flight team, was recognized as the Region X Coach of the Year. This award is presented to the coach that has demonstrated the best qualities in coaching, support and leadership. Team members nominate the coach they feel best meets these criteria.
“Our students do well at the SAFECON because they are very committed,” Floyd said. “They practice for many hours in the various events and the pilots spend hundreds of their own dollars each year in preparation for this SAFECON. We also had strong leadership on the team with the senior members passing on their knowledge to junior members.”
Hosted by the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA), Region X SAFECON is a regional competition, consisting of collegiate flight teams from Washington, D.C., Md., N.C., S.C. and Va. including Averett University, Liberty University and Elizabeth City State University. Each team competes in various categories. This year’s competition was held Nov. 2-5 in Franklin, Va.
