GTCC Flight Team Qualifies for National Competition
- Each team member scored in the top 10 for at least one event
- GTCC’s Jay Geer named Region X Coach of the Year
JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Guilford Technical Community College’s Flight Team recently competed in the 2017 Region X flight competition in Danville, Virginia. The G-Tech Flyers’ outstanding performance qualified the team for the national competition in three events: flight events (third place); ground events (third place); and overall (third place).
The GTCC Flight Team is one of 78 member schools in the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA). With the regional performance, the GTCC Flight Team has earned a spot to compete in SAFECON 2018, which will be hosted by Indiana State University from April 30 to May 5.
“The regional competition was the first NIFA competition for all but two of our flight team members, which makes their success all the more exciting,” said Audrey Floyd, GTCC’s program director for Aviation Management and Career Pilot. “They are dedicated and continuously strive to improve their skills in ground and flight events.”
Jay Geer, coach for the G-Tech Flyers, was also named Region X Coach of the Year at the event.
“Jay did an outstanding job preparing such a new group of students,” said Floyd. “We are looking forward to competing at the national level.”
The National Intercollegiate Flying Association was formed for the purposes of developing and advancing aviation education; to promote, encourage, and foster safety in aviation; to promote and foster communications and cooperation between aviation students, educators, educational institutions, and the aviation industry; and to provide an arena for collegiate aviation competition.
