GTCC THEATER TO HOLD AUDITIONS FOR MUSICAL ‘HANDS ON A HARDBODY’
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AUGUST 22, 2016
HIGH POINT, N.C. — Guilford Technical Community College’s Theater program will hold auditions for its fall production of the Broadway musical “Hands on a Hardbody” 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31 and Thursday, Sept. 1. Auditions are open to the community and will be held at the Center for Creative and Performing Arts on GTCC’s High Point Campus.
“Hands on a Hardbody” is a three-time Tony-nominated musical with book by Doug Wright, lyrics by Amanda Green, and music by Trey Anastasio and Amanda Green. In addition, the musical was nominated for nine Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical. It was on Broadway in 2013.
GTCC’s performance dates are 7 p.m. Nov. 10-12 and Nov. 17-19, and 3 p.m. Nov. 13 and 20 at the Center for Creative and Performing Arts, 901 S. Main St., GTCC High Point Campus.
Inspired by the cult classic documentary of the same name, “Hands on a Hardbody” is about the human drama for the American dream. For 10 hard-luck Texans, a new lease on life is so close they can touch it. Under a scorching sun for days, armed with nothing but hope, humor and the need to succeed, whoever can remain standing the longest keeping their hand on a brand-new truck gets to drive it home.
Inspired by true events and infused with a “fresh roots-rock vibe,” this is the hilarious, hard-fought contest where only one winner can drive away with the American dream. Ten contestants. Four days. One truck. The New York Times proclaimed: “You can hear the sound of America singing in this daring new musical.”
“Hands on a Hardbody” is directed by Jenna Tamisiea Elser (artistic director of GLOW-Lyric Theatre in Greenville, S.C.) with music direction by Stephanie Lindley (artistic director of Found Space Theatre in Greensboro) and lighting design and technical direction by GTCC theater instructor Jody Tidwell. The production is produced and managed by GTCC theater instructor Joshua Waterstone. Other designers, stage manager and crew positions will be filled by students and the community.
