Guilford Technical Community College Leading Effort to Support Hurricane Harvey Flood Victims
- Donations will support students and families at Lone Star College-North Harris in Houston
JAMESTOWN, N.C. (Oct. 3, 2017) — Guilford Technical Community College is leading a community effort to donate much-needed clothing and supplies to support the flood victims of Hurricane Harvey. The donated supplies will go to the students and families of Lone Star College-North Harris in Houston.
“This effort started organically. Many GTCC students, faculty and staff have maintained contact with Dr. Laura Yannuzzi, a former division chair who moved to Houston earlier this year,” said Steve Turner, interim division chair for humanities and social sciences at GTCC.
Lone Star College-North Harris, where Dr. Yannuzzi is vice president of instruction, serves two school districts. Like many areas devastated by the flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey, the need in Houston is very real.
“Driving up and down the neighborhoods, I see the many homes damaged, cars ruined and lives forever altered. Every piece of clothing and furniture, every toy, every memento is now in a huge pile of debris waiting to be taken the landfill,” said Dr. Yannuzzi. “Young and old, rich and poor, families and single individuals, so many have been affected. While the storm has left, the recovery still continues.”
