NEED MONEY FOR COLLEGE? ATTEND FAFSA COMPLETION DAY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JAN. 30, 2017

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Need money for college? Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) and Say Yes Guilford are partnering to offer monthly Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Completion Day workshops beginning in February. All workshops are free.

GTCC’s Office of Financial Aid will assist eligible current and prospective students and their families complete the FAFSA, as well as GTCC’s scholarship application. The priority deadline to file both is May 1 for the 2017-2018 school year.

Completing the FAFSA is the first step toward receiving federal aid for college. By not filling out the FAFSA, students could be missing out on financial aid.

Students should bring the following information with them to the workshop and GTCC financial aid specialists will walk them through the FAFSA application line-by-line.

  • Prior to the event, each student and one parent should apply for a FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov/npas. Make sure to keep a record of the parent’s and student’s email addresses, their answers to the security questions, and both FSA IDs in a secure place. You’ll need that information to sign the FAFSA.
  • Completing the 2017-2018 FAFSA on the Web Worksheet in advance will help you get familiar with what’s on the electronic version you’ll be completing and submitting. Worksheet available at fafsa.gov.
  • The day of the event, you’ll need to bring information from your 2015 tax filing. With that in hand, most families will be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool in the income/asset section of the FAFSA.
