NEW CONFERENCE CENTER DIRECTOR WAS BORN TO PLAN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JANUARY 14, 2016
COLFAX, N.C. — Teresa Goins has been planning events since high school – beginning with her junior and senior proms. And although the details are fuzzy — was it a Parisian theme or an espionage theme? — the enthusiasm that organizing and planning sparked in her never faded.
“It felt natural to me,” said Goins, a native of Matthews, N.C. “I think I just like pulling details together. I like logistics and figuring out how to make things work.”
As the new director of the Conference Center at Guilford Technical Community College, Goins is bringing that same excitement to her role as she markets the center as a desired meeting venue in the Triad. The idea of creating a marketing and business plan for a new venue drew Goins to the position, she said.
“I enjoy developing new processes and seeing growth through implementing practical and positive change,” said Goins, who began her role at GTCC in September. “The Conference Center has great potential and boundless possibilities, so knowing that I will play an integral role in turning that potential into reality is very exciting.”
The Conference Center at GTCC is a year-round venue located on the GTCC Donald W. Cameron Campus, which opened in August 2014 in Northwest Guilford County. The center features a 250-capacity auditorium with tiered seating, state-of-the-art audio and visual equipment, several breakout rooms and a catering kitchen. The venue is purpose-built for corporate events and meetings.
“This is a great option for those who want a unique meeting environment,” Goins said.
Goins has more than 12 years of experience in the hospitality industry. Her love for event planning was further solidified while studying communications at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she helped plan the college’s festivals and annual concert as committee chair and vice president of the association for campus entertainment.
“I’ve always been all about organizing,” she said. “Planning events is exciting and creative, and it’s never the same.”
For the past nine years, Goins has worked in a conference center environment similar to the Conference Center at GTCC. Most recently, she served as conference center and catering director for Bank of America in Charlotte, N.C. (2008-2011) and conference center manager of Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. (2011-2015).
In event planning and managing, change is always a constant. There is a multitude of logistics that could go wrong at any moment, Goins said. But for her, that’s also the beauty of it.
“With so many things that could happen out of your control, you have to ensure the items you can control are done right each and every time,” she said. “So event planning brings its own level of excitement and anticipation to each day. You can rarely ever be bored, which is good for me because I like to stay busy.”
When she’s not working, Goins loves to sing and take Zumba classes. She also enjoys the occasional living room yoga session. Whether it’s work or play, Goins says she tries to approach each day with positive thinking. She admits it can be challenging – and some days she says she fails miserably at it – “but I think we all have the power to make a difference in our workplace and our community,” she said. “And a positive thought is the starting point.”
