GTCC Student Among Three in State to Receive Next Step Scholarship

JAMESTOWN, N.C. – Guilford Technical Community College student Lauren Winfrey is one of three recipients of the 2018 Crumley Roberts Next Step Scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship is awarded to North Carolina community college students who will transfer to a four-year college or university after completing their degree.

A selection committee of community leaders reviewed the applications and nominated the scholarship winners. Representatives from Crumley Roberts presented the scholarship to Winfrey on April 26 at GTCC’s Jamestown Campus.

“One major aspect of the year’s application was the essay. We wanted to focus on one of Crumley Roberts’ core values — standing up for clients when they can’t stand up on their own,” said Ruth Heyd, executive director of community engagement and employee wellness at Crumley Roberts.

Applicants were asked to write an essay about a time when they stood up for themselves or others to make the community around them better. Heyd shared that Winfrey’s essay was “one of those standouts.”

Lauren will graduate from GTCC on May 10 and plans to continue her education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She wants to major in psychology and begins classes in the fall.
