JAMESTOWN, N.C. — Matthew DeSantis, associate professor of political science at Guilford Technical Community College, has received a Brussels Study Tour grant from the Center for European Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to learn more about the European Union.
DeSantis will be part of a North Carolina cohort comprised of undergraduate students, K-12 teachers, community college instructors, and MSI/HBCU faculty, participating in the five-day study tour. Participants will gain first-hand knowledge and experiences to further their understanding of Europe and the European Union. The tour is organized by the University of Pittsburgh’s European Studies Center (and formerly by UNC-CH).
DeSantis said he was interested in applying for the travel grant for a number of reasons.
“My academic research on religion and politics leads me to be curious about some of the transition taking place in the EU currently. Finding out how Europe is dealing with an influx of Muslim immigrants and how those individuals are assimilated socially and economically into the broad culture is fascinating to me,” he said. “Also, the tour will provide me with a great opportunity to come back and share that information with my classes, the Model United Nations Club and other people around campus to hopefully continue GTCC’s efforts to internationalize the curriculum.”
DeSantis’ academic research focuses on evangelical politics in the United States as well as public opinion and presidential politics, all areas in which he has published and presented at national conferences. He received his bachelor’s in political science from Furman University and his master’s in political science from the University of Florida.
